What is a Sinus Lift?
A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation, is a bone grafting procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of your molars and premolars, just below the maxillary sinuses. This procedure is often necessary when there is not enough bone height in the upper jaw or when the sinuses are too close to the jaw to place dental implants.
The maxillary sinuses are air-filled spaces located just above your upper back teeth. After tooth loss, the bone in this area may shrink or become too thin, leaving insufficient support for implants. A sinus lift allows new bone to grow, creating the stable foundation needed to support a long-lasting dental implant.
Why Might You Need a Sinus Lift?
You may be a candidate for a sinus lift if you:
- Are missing multiple teeth in the back of your upper jaw
- Have bone loss due to periodontal disease or tooth loss
- Were born with a congenital condition that affects bone structure
- Need dental implants but lack the bone height and density to support them
This procedure is commonly performed to make implants possible in areas where they otherwise couldn’t be placed.

How Is a Sinus Lift Performed?
A sinus lift is a routine oral surgery performed in our office under local anesthesia, with the option of oral or IV sedation for added comfort.
- Making a small incision in the gum tissue near your premolars or molars
- Creating an opening in the bone to access the sinus membrane
- Gently lifting the sinus membrane upward
- Filling the space beneath with bone graft material, which may come from:
- Your own body (autograft)
- A tissue bank (allograft)
- A synthetic material designed to stimulate bone growth - Closing the incision with stitches and allowing time for healing
Over the next several months, the graft material integrates with your jawbone, creating enough bone volume to securely anchor dental implants.
In Some Cases: One Procedure Instead of Two
If you already have some existing bone height between your jaw and sinus, it may be possible to perform the sinus lift and implant placement at the same time, reducing treatment time.
However, if the bone is too thin, the sinus lift must be completed first, followed by several months of healing before implants can be placed.

What Are the Benefits of a Sinus Lift?
- Makes dental implants possible for patients with upper jaw bone loss
- Increases bone volume and strength for long-term implant success
- Enhances stability and functionality of implants
- Restores your ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence
Years ago, patients with severe bone loss had no options beyond removable dentures. Today, thanks to sinus lift surgery, dental implants are a reliable and lasting solution—even in challenging cases.
